Why The Greenwood?
Greenwood was a historic freedom colony in Tulsa, Oklahoma. As one of the most prominent concentrations of African-American businesses in the United States during the early 20th century, it was popularly known as America’s first “Black Wall Street“.

The community flourished.
There were over one hundred black business, including 2 newspapers, 41 groceries stores and meat markets, 30 cafés and restaurants, and offices for 33 professionals, with 15 of them being doctors and lawyers.

Greenwood is where a young Count Basie had his first taste of big-band Jazz. The Greenwood nightclubs were the place to go for Jazz and Blues.
Leave it to the residents of Greenwood to set the standard for night life back in 1920. Not just nightlife, but life as a whole. Greenwood was actually better off economically than some of the white areas of Tulsa.
Oklahoma only had two airports… In Greenwood, there were around six black families that owned their own planes
Greenwood continued proper until the Tulsa race riot of 1921, in which white residents massacred as many as 300 black residents, injuring hundreds more, and razed the neighborhood within hours. The riot was one of the most devastating massacres in the history of U.S. race relations, destroying the once thriving Greenwood community.
The Greenwood is open to all, and in the spirit of Black Wall Street, committed to allowing all to flourish.
